HE design principles that fused ‘metropolitan’ and ‘real’ to create Shimano’s new Metrea groupset have inspired our stunning new high-speed city bike.
The Pilot creates a sportier riding position for urban cyclists, without pushing them onto the drops. This sophisticated dream machine uses new H-type handlebars to place the rider’s forearms in a natural position, while allowing easy access to the gear shifters and brakes.
The result is an aerodynamic riding position that still leaves the rider perfectly placed for quick handling and sharp manoeuvrability, ideal for congested city streets. The quick-fire Metrea gears shift smoothly, while the powerful hydraulic disc brakes haul the bike to a standstill, without fuss or drama, in the cut-and-thrust of city riding.
Marrying function with sublime form, the Pilot combines urban chic with genuine performance for an exhilarating ride. At its heart is a jaw-dropping titanium frame paired with beautiful carbon forks.
When we first set eyes on Shimano Metrea, we knew instantly that this sophisticated groupset demanded a special bike to match. The J.Laverack Pilot transforms mundane commutes into luxury travel. It’s designed specifically for higher speed city riding – sure-footed whatever the road surface; swift, with its sporty titanium frame;
and comfortable, thanks to its clearance for wider tyres. If you’re late to work, it will only be because you couldn’t resist riding one more street or one more block before locking your Pilot in the bike shed. The ride home at the end of the day will never come soon enough.
The Pilot joins the J.ACK four season, all road bike in the J.Laverack range, and like its stablemate derives its name from Jack Laverack, a passionate cyclist in the post-war era and a test pilot of the first British fighter jets. Just as jet engines revolutionised flying, the Pilot dares to welcome a new age of handlebar and shifter that will revolutionise urban cycling.
The Pilot’s frame is designed for a multitude of terrain, with clearance for up to 35mm tyres for both comfort and versatility. The bike is available as both a flat and H-type handlebar bike, and in either single or double chainring formats (46 teeth, or 46 + 11 teeth respectively). Both are twinned with a wide-ranging 11-speed, 11-32 cassette as standard.
Customers can also specify rack mounts, mudguard mounts and even choose the type of bottom bracket. And, as on all J.Laverack bikes, customers can have a personal design or motivational mantra glass blasted on the frame, to make their bikes truly unique.

The larger bottom bracket shell increases the frame stiffness in this vital area as well as allowing for larger 30mm diameter aluminium crank spindles that are stiffer and lighter than their 24mm counterparts.
Both gear and the rear brake cables are routed through the frame. Aside from being aesthetically more pleasing, routing cables internally protects them from dirt ensuring smooth shifting and braking for longer.
A wider head tube where the fork meets the frame increases the stiffness in that area, reducing flex and improving steering precision.
The rear disc brake is mount is positioned on the chain stay, using the structural strength of the frame (the triangle that is made up of the seat stay, chain stay and seat post) to offer optimum braking performance.
As a guide, we’d suggest:

THE METAL WITH METTLE!
Titanium offers a great balance of properties that make it the perfect material for bicycle frames. It’s lightweight, durable and can withstand a lifetime of use whilst remaining corrosion free.
Large tube diameters allow titanium to be stiff where needed, yet the metal is naturally very good at delivering a smoother ride, especially over rough sections of road, so it’s perfect for long days in the saddle.
We use 3Al-2.5V titanium to build our frames, following the aerospace industry lead of adding 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium to the titanium to create the optimum performing material.
Aside from the material and ride benefits we just love the way titanium looks. J.Laverack frames aim to forge form and function to bring an unrivalled quality of ride and style to those that want more from their frame.
